Holiday Inn discontinued their iconic Great Sign in 1980. At the time, the company switched to less expensive, plastic back-lit signs.

Most of the original signs are dismantled. Some have been refurbished and reused. Some (pictured) were left under a tarp behind old cars for decades until randomly being discovered one day in the 21st century.
